Samaki first began smoking fish in East Africa; on the slopes of Mount Kenya during the late 1970's; originally established to supply Kanya's world famous safari lodges. (Samaki is the Swahili word for "fish") The company quickly earned a reputation for excellence, exporting smoked fish to some of the finest gourmet shops in Europe. In 1983 the company moved to the United States where it is now located in Port Jervis, New York. Samaki still remains an artisan, family smokehouse, known for its high quality smoked fish products.
